The public freely enters from a major pedestrian pathway along the north edge of the site. The blue layer consists of a small pond within the central court which collects stormwater that is drained into a larger pond nearby. When rainfall is low, and onsite irrigation demands are not met, the flow reverses.

System-wise, this form-logic exhibits several interlocking and overlapping layers. The building block geometry consists of recesses, voids, edges, designed as decks, promenades, and balconies, that permit the movement of people, air, light, and energy. The site is intentionally permeable: there are no fences. A network of public pathways and social spaces is overlaid onto the greenery.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) is the most liked of eight public hospitals in Singapore. This has much to do with how it has been designed, starting with a V-shaped configuration of blocks, enclosing a central court with dense landscaping.

In 2005, in the midst of construction, the KTPH team expanded its blue-green footprint by adopting the adjacent pond. Concrete edges of the waterbody were hacked away, and aquatic plants brought in, to clean the water, and create ecological niches. A walking trail was added, linking it to hospital grounds and a nearby public housing estate.

When the new micropark was completed, the blue-green elements within the hospital were connected to those of the pond, creating a critical mass and, with it, a new centrality. The pond increased green cover and social space by 400%. Forty percent of all blue-green spaces are accessible to the public and have become a social nexus. Many visitors say they are drawn to KTPH’s biodiversity and its naturalistic expanse of greenery and water.
